3 Common Car Accident TBIs

BrainInj3

People can sustain head injuries in a variety of ways, like falls and even violent assaults. One of the most common ways to suffer a head injury, however, is in a car accident, where blunt force impacts and whiplash-like movements can cause serious brain injuries. We’ve included a list of some head injuries that are especially prevalent among car accident victims, but recognize that these are far from being the only types of injuries that a person can sustain in a car accident. For help recovering compensation to cover your own head injury-related injuries, please reach out to one of our dedicated Maitland traumatic brain injury lawyers today.

Concussions

Concussions are a type of traumatic brain injury (TBI) that occurs when a blow to the head or sudden movement causes the brain to collide with the inside of the skull. These movements can damage brain tissue and cause chemical changes in the brain cells, which in turn, can cause a wide range of symptoms, including:

  • Headaches;
  • Lightheadedness and dizziness;
  • Nausea and vomiting;
  • Sensitivity to light and noise;
  • Difficulty concentrating;
  • Memory problems; and
  • Difficulty sleeping.

Rest and time off from work is often enough to help heal most mild concussions, but in serious cases, an accident victim could require more intensive therapies. Unfortunately, the damage caused by traumatic brain injuries can end up being permanent, resulting in lifelong disability for the victim.

Intracranial Hematomas

Another common head injury sustained by car accident victims is the intracranial hematoma, which occurs when a blow to the head causes blood vessels in the brain to rupture and blood to collect in the skull or brain tissue. Symptoms include worsening headaches, drowsiness, vomiting, slurred speech, paralysis, seizures, and unconsciousness. Intracranial hematomas are extremely dangerous and potentially life-threatening if left untreated. Most require surgical intervention, after which a patient will likely need both physical and occupational therapies.

Coup and Contrecoup Brain Injuries

Coup and contrecoup brain injuries occur when a person’s head strikes a stationary object, such as a window or steering wheel, causing the brain to hit both the front and then back of the skull. The subsequent bruising at the sites of impact, known as lesions, as well as the tearing of the internal lining, tissues, and blood vessels in the brain can cause the brain to swell dangerously. Treatment could require immediate surgical decompression, drainage of the hematoma, and intracranial pressure monitoring, as well as the use of anti-epileptic medications.
